Marilyn Monroe, Igor Stravinsky, Pablo Picasso and John F. Kennedy: just a few of the innumerable celebrities who sat for American photographer Arnold Newman (1918-2006). One of the most influential portrait photographers of the 20th century, Newman is recognized as the father of environmental portraiture. He thought a simple portrait photograph was inadequate: to suggest life and character, the picture also needed to show the subject's personal surroundings. In this major retrospective of Newman's work (the first since his death in 2006), the Hague Museum of Photography presents 150 original vintage prints brought over especially from the United States. Arnold Newman -- Masterclass includes both his most renowned portraits and his forgotten still lifes, architectural studies and early street photography. Often called the father of modern photography, Frenchman Eugène Atget embraced a heartfelt realism that influenced generations of younger photographers—including an American, Berenice Abbott, who championed him in his later career and carried on his legacy. This film examines the work of both artists, juxtaposing Atget's Paris oeuvre with Abbott's views of New York, describing how their paths crossed amidst the Parisian avant-garde, shedding light on their unlikely connection to the surrealists, and helping viewers understand the aesthetic and personal bond they shared. Rare archival interview footage featuring Abbott is included, along with commentary from photographers working today

Ruth Bernhard

Published on Jan 30, 2013

Ruth Bernhard (October 14, 1905 -- December 18, 2006) was a German-born American photographer. She was born in Berlin and studied at the Berlin Academy of Art from 1925--27. Bernhard's father, Lucian Bernhard, was known for his poster and typeface design. By the late-1920s, while living in Manhattan, Bernhard was heavily involved in the lesbian sub-culture of the artistic community, becoming friends with photographer Berenice Abbott and her lover, critic Elizabeth McCausland. She wrote about her "bisexual escapdes" in her memoir. In 1934 Bernhard began photographing women in the nude. It would be this art form for which she would eventually become best known. Though many people were unaware of this, Bernhard produced the photography for the first catalog published by the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. The name of this exhibition was "The Art of The Machine." Her father Lucian Bernhard set up the meeting with MoMA for her. In 1967, Bernhard met United States Air Force Colonel Price Rice, an African American man ten years younger than her, and the two became lovers. They would remain together until his death in 1999. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruth_Ber... Music: Goldmund - The Gardener Fan Music Video / An Invisible Light Category Entertainment

Paul Strand

  Published on Aug 14, 2013

Although his influence on the history of photography has been nothing short of profound, Paul Strand (1890-1976) remains a curiously shrouded and paradoxical figure. While passionately devoted to humanity, he was happiest in the isolation of the dark room. A pioneer filmmaker (Manhatta, Native Land, Heart of Spain, The Wave), he found the process of collaboration painful. Strand established himself in New York in the 1920's as a master of light and structure, with his now famous photo of Wall Street inspired by the forms and movement of European modernist painters such as Matisse and Picasso. His closeup portraits and landscapes were equally profound. John Walker's Strand: Under the Dark Cloth is a documentary that is "beautifully crafted, thoroughly researched and intimately recounted" (Variety) with generous amounts of Strand's most famous photographs, clips from his films and fascinating interviews with friends and collaborators including Fred Zinnemann, Cesare Zavattini and Georgia O'Keeffle. It is a valuable and comprehensive introduction to the life and work of Paul Strand suitable for both art historians and general viewers alike.

The Art of the Timelapse ----- Michael Shaneblum

Into the Atmosphere.....Finding a Path in Life through ART

Into The Atmosphere from Michael Shainblum on Vimeo.

A special thanks to Vice and The Creators Project for filming an awesome behind the scenes video and finally letting me tell my story about my learning disability and how art has helped me find my path in life. You can check out the video here: youtube.com/watch?v=lxxV5mIcI9E&; “Into The Atmosphere,” is my tribute to the state of California and the beautiful deserts, mountains and coastlines that exist there. This video showcases a variety of national/state parks as well as less recognized natural areas. The video also focuses on clouds, fog and interesting atmospheric conditions. Although California is known for blue sunshine skies, seeing a colorful storm cloud over Half Dome or an incredible sunset at the La Jolla Coves is really a sight to see. The goal of this video is to show these environments in their best possible light. Living in California all my life, I had as much time as I needed to really capture the essence and beauty it provides. This video was an ongoing project for about a year with an estimated 75,000 images taken, and about 12,400 made it into the 3.5 minute piece. My Grandmother Alice Harpin passed away during the last two weeks of shooting this video. The film is dedicated to her memory. Without her and the love of my family this video would not have been possible. To create this video there were many nights sleeping outside, and many days spent in the wild to embrace the environment and get to know the surroundings. There is a common misconception about Timelapse shooters that we quickly set up cameras and go sleep in the car for hours at a time, which is far from the truth. We are constantly hiking heavy equipment through dangerous areas and spending time camping in uncomfortable situations, I love it and wouldn't trade it for anything else. Some of the locations are Mono Lake, Anza Borrego Desert, Alabama Hills, Trona Pinnacles, Big Sur, Mount Laguna, Santa Maria, Yosemite, Gaviota, The Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, La Jolla Coves, Santa Ynez, the San Francisco Coast, and the Santa Barbara Mountains. Several of my poems...........

Alive*

I love blue green mixed against
soothing eggplant hues and
orange gold strands that stand up

the breath, smile, skin feel of him
the man who treasures each second
of our walk through time together

a furry bundle watching door,
so overjoyed she jumps beyond
eleven years to hug me with her eyes

the act of never giving up
through grasp for air,
bloodied knees, exhausted crawl
reaching one more time
for the best of futures

retraining muscles that could so easily
stop
freeze in place
to press through wrinkled stance
to try, to reach for hands, to smile
while all the while
thanking the light
for switches that work both ways.

Freed*

Steep holds my breath hostage.
Knees quiver, eyes stutter
and yet
a voice whispers
“Yes, “

A louder voice says,
“You own this!”

I move into
downward fall,
remembering the rhythm.

I am dancing
with gravity,
timing the steps
with my poles.

I am flying
across the sky.
Joy propels me.
I ascend above the clouds
of day to day.

Smile explodes
within me.

“I did it,” I say.
I can do anything.

Strength*

(For Henry)

He is the mountain around which my heart grows,
the man who swallows tears, because he knows

I slowly pass through white out.
Before his eyes, parts of me begin to fade.

There is no scream loud enough
to wake the gods, to stop the blizzard in its tracks.

And yet, he smiles.
He does not run; he does not hide.

He walks beside me, each caress a shield
against the never ending storm.

Irving Penn's Extraordinary Portrait Photographs from Miral57 on Vimeo.

A Poem

Frames of View*

Frowns bend down
closed corner minds.
Fingers point the way,
through the dark,
into parking lots of dust.

Must whispers crown
upside down handshakes?
Is it warm on the other side
of frost tinged windows?

Smudges crust the view.
The sun is just behind a cloud.

It is a point fixed just above my head,
without shadow.

Like faith, it radiates,
steadfast,
a love of all things possible.

A Poem - Conforming Norms

Conforming Norms

The neighbors ask if I’m ok.
I smile, nod, walk quietly away
into a dark soundless room
that the dog and I occupy.

Home is a fortress island,
a silent well.
I float the moments by
until the day stands still.

“Stand and deliver,”
a voice keeps calling.

“Pass the bonbons,” I say.
“I am too tired to fight.”

A Good Life Too: Alonzo Clemons

Alonzo Clemons is a sculptor. Can you feel the love in his smile, in his hnnds, in the delicacy of his work?

A Good Life, Too: Alonzo Clemons from The Good Line on Vimeo.

From Vimeo: We really appreciate all of the support from the Vimeo community. You are amazing people. Special thanks to the Vimeo Staff for the staff pick and support. This all helps Alonzo keep doing what he does best. You can learn more about Alonzo Clemons' work at alonzoclemons.com When he was a toddler, Alonzo Clemons suffered a brain injury. It forever changed the way he learns and communicates but also the way he interprets the world around him. Very early it became clear to Alonzo that he had to sculpt. He was institutionalized for ten years in a state hospital which wasn't a pleasant experience, but he continued to find ways to make delicate figures with his hands. When they wouldn't give him clay, he would scrape warm tar from the parking lot. Despite his limitations Alonzo continues to sculpt outside of Boulder, Colorado.
